Bayer MaterialScience

Bayer MaterialScience ( BMS) is a subsidiary of Bayer AG. The BMS manufactures and develops materials, such as paints, adhesives and sealant systems, polycarbonates (CDs, DVDs ), polyurethanes (mattresses, thermal insulation in construction, shoe soles, car seats, insulation for refrigerators, films), etc.

History and Organization

Bayer MaterialScience arose in the course of the restructuring of Bayer Group as of 1 January 2004. Herein, the former range of the predecessor company Bayer Polymers were re-sorted. A part of the range traveled, including its production facilities in the new company Lanxess, which is now listed as a separate company in the DAX operates in the market. The other part remained in the Bayer Group and immigrated to the Bayer MaterialScience.

The BMS is divided into three " business units ". Specifically, these are:

  • BU Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties ( CAS business )
  • BU Polycarbonates ( PCS BU )
  • BU Polyurethanes ( PUR business )

At around 30 production sites in the world, Bayer MaterialScience is represented.

The main segments served are the automotive, electrical and electronics, construction and sports and leisure industries.

Known Inventions

The two ( in terms of sales ) most associated Bayer MaterialScience business units Polyurethanes and Polycarbonates look back on their history of invention in their own home. Otto Bayer synthesized for the first time in 1937 polyurethanes. Hermann Schnell was 1953, the copyright for the first industrially relevant polycarbonate. In the field of polyurethane raw materials and systems, and the polycarbonate production both business units are global or top position.

Known products

  • The official FIFA World Cup ball and the UEFA European Championship ball are designed in collaboration with Adidas since 1986 by Bayer MaterialScience. ( Except World Cup ball 2010)
  • Approximately 20 percent of the CDs produced worldwide are made, inter alia, from the polycarbonate Makrolon.

Student Laboratory Baylab plastics

On the grounds of Chemparks in Leverkusen Bayer MaterialScience operates the student laboratory Baylab plastics. Getting content and themes for the plastic laboratory has been compiled from the autumn of 2005. End of 2006, it was first tested by training groups, first student groups visited the student lab in January 2007, the beginning of October 2007, it was opened by Andreas Pinkwart. Goal of the facility is to provide an insight into the work and life of a research chemical company.
