Beate Gütschow

Gütschow ( born August 11, 1970 in Mainz) is a contemporary German artist. She lives and works in Cologne and Berlin.

Life and work

Gütschow studied from 1993 to 2000 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and in 1998 at the Art Academy in Oslo. She taught as a visiting professor from 2009 to 2010 at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. Since 2011 she is a professor at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne.

In their work Gütschow examines the difference between photographic representation and reality. It highlights also the extent to which the viewer's perception is influenced by already existing image knowledge.

LS series

In her first series, "LS" (short for Landscape), Gütschow reconstructed landscapes painting of the 17th and 18th centuries with the means of photography. On the computer they assembled from many fragments photos that follow the design principles of the ideal landscape.

S series

The "S" (short for city) described recent work group consists of large-format black-and- white photos, which are also composed of many individual images. Different architectures and countries are united in an image. These works make reference to the documentary photography, however, continued their photographic fiction meet.

I Series

In your latest series "I" ( abbreviation for interior ) to Gütschow is critically with the visual culture of advertising photography by mundane objects - arranged in her studio to surreal scenarios - a car battery, a health chair, an overhead projector.

Honors and Awards

Gütschow won awards including the " ars viva prize" of the Cultural Committee of German Business ( 2006), the Otto - Dix- Price / IBM Art Award New Media, Gera (2001 ) and the Art Prize of the city of Nordhorn ( 2001). 2001 Gütschow was also a fellow at the Villa Aurora, Los Angeles.

Film

Gütschow was one of the protagonists of the documentary " In Berlin " (2009) by Michael Ballhaus and Ciro Cappellari.
