Beatrice of Nazareth

Beatrijs of Nazareth, OCist ( * 1200 in Tienen (today's Belgium); † August 29, 1268 in Nazareth Convent ) was a Flemish mystic.

Her life story is known by a medieval Latin Vita, the " Vita Beatricis ", written by an unknown priest who this ' was based on lost recording Beatrijs.

Beatrijs ' wealthy father founded after the death of his wife in the course of time, three monasteries, Bloemendaal, Magdendaal and Nazareth, and finally joined in on the Cistercian Order. His children were religious. Beatrijs had received a good education at Beguines in Zoutleeuw and the Sisters in Bloemendaal. In Bloemendaal it was then even Cistercian. During a stay in a monastery in Rameia / Rameige / La Ramee, where she learned the making of ornate manuscripts, they became friends with Ida of Nivelles. 1236 she entered the convent of Nazareth. There, she was elected prioress, a post which she held until her death.

Beatrijs wrote a mystical work in Flemish ( "Seven manners van minne " meaning " Seven Kinds of Love" ), which deals with various aspects of spiritual experience. In this document, among others, can be Demonstrate influences of love mysticism of Bernard of Clairvaux.
