Beclomethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive properties. It is used as a drug for the topical treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. Is also used in the Dipropionsäureester ( beclomethasone -17 ,21- dipropionate, on package inserts often only beclomethasone dipropionate).

Pharmacokinetic properties

The drug beclomethasone -17 ,21- dipropionate has been used since 1972 as a prodrug. After hydrolysis by esterases to the active metabolite beclomethasone -17 - monopropionate arises. In the liver they are converted by means of first-pass effect in pharmacologically inactive metabolites such as beclomethasone -21- monopropionate and beclomethasone ( free alcohol ). This limits the systemic bioavailability, and toxicity.

Effect

Beclometasone has anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive and anti-allergic. It is thus used for the treatment of asthmatic disease shapes, and difficulty breathing. The full effect occurs after a few hours or days.
