Beda Dudík

Beda Dudík (actually Francis / Franz Dudík, Czech: František Beda Dudík; born January 29, 1815 in Kojetin; † January 18, 1890 as abbot and Titularabt of Trebitsch in Raigern / Rajhrad monastery) was in Austrian Moravia of the 19th century a Benedictine, historian, priest and writer.

Life

Beda Dudík was the eldest of nine children of Vincenç and Magdalena Dudík. After a philosophical studies in Brno, he moved to the University of Olomouc. In 1836 he joined the Benedictine Order and was ordained on August 20, 1840 Raigern monastery in Moravia as a priest.

For historical research, he went in 1851 to Sweden in 1852 to Rome. Until 1854 worked as a teacher of classical languages ​​and history at a secondary school in Brno. In 1855 he became Associate Professor of Historical Research at the University of Vienna. Between the years 1853 and 1859 he established in Vienna, the historic library of the German Order. In 1859 he became professor of medieval history and historiographer of Moravia. Due to this activity contemporaries sometimes referred to him as Moravian Palacký.

In 1866 he was a war correspondent in Italy and in 1869 personal chaplain of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In 1870, he visited for research purposes from the countries of France, Belgium and Holland, in 1874 Russia, which he later toured repeatedly.
