Before Midnight is an American feature film from the year 2013. He was like its two predecessors Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) by director Richard Linklater realized with Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke in the lead roles.

Action

The story of a romantic encounter between the Americans and the French Celine Jesse, which began in Vienna and Paris was continued, now reached a provisional conclusion. During the slow development of a love relationship has been drawn in the predecessors, the second continuation of the love story draws a preliminary summary of the events.

Nine years after their last meeting in Paris are Jesse and Celine become a couple and parents of twins. The family spends their holiday in Greece in the property of the aging writer Patrick, a friend and supporter of Jesse.

Background

The trio Linklater, Hawke and Delpy had hired after the last sequel in 2004 reflect on how they wanted the story of Jesse and Celine to tell others. Ethan Hawke said in an interview in 2011 that the time interval of turn nine years is just what is needed to produce another sequel. That same year, the joint work began on the script. The film played a about 1.7 million U.S. dollars and was January 20, 2013 premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It had its international premiere at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival, also in January 2013.

Reviews

The international press was largely done by the third edition of the history of the relationship, but stressed the unusually pessimistic to tragic tone of the film. David Edelstein of New York Magazine considers Before Midnight remind the audience about how important it is not to forget what you originally considered to be important in life, and thereby enrich his life again.

Nadia Weigelt of the DPA says on stern.de: " Before Midnight is at least as funny, quick-witted, imaginative, poetic and smart - but at the same time extremely sad. "
