Bei Ling

Bei Ling (Chinese贝 岭, full name Huang at Lǐng黄贝岭; born December 28, 1959 in Shanghai) is a Chinese writer, poet, essayist and dissident. In 2000 he was arrested by the Chinese security authorities, after he had previously published dissident literature. Bei Ling but was released relatively quickly, since both well-known fellow writers such as Susan Sontag and Günter Grass and the American government strongly made ​​for his release. In 2009 moved Bei Ling at the Frankfurt Book Fair in the interest of the German media. Life

Bei Ling was born in Shanghai and lived there before the Cultural Revolution some years with his grandparents. Later, his parents brought him to Beijing, where he attended school and university. At the end of 1988 traveled for the first time Ling in the U.S., where he met Ai Weiwei. As China in 1989 formed the student movement, Bei Ling fell into a crisis of conscience: Go back to the home in order to join the demonstrations or stay in safe New York? While Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Prize later, with which Bei Ling at that time shared an apartment, decided to return, remained Bei Ling for the time being in the United States. In 1992 he founded in Boston, the literary journal Tendency and since then undertook a massive effort to publish it also in China. In August 2000, the 13th edition Tendency was finally printed in Beijing, Bei Ling arrested for illegal publication. Interventions by international fellow writers, most notably Susan Sontag, and the U.S. government carried out two weeks later he was released and - immediate expulsion from China. Since the end of his prison stay in China, Bei Ling lives in foreign exile. The United States and Taiwan were at this time to his new adopted home. In 2001 founded Bei Ling Liu Xiaobo, together with the Independent Chinese PEN Club.

Publications

In -form poetry, essays and book reviews have been published, among others, in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Times Book Review and the Harvard Review. He was the founder and editor of the literary magazine Tendency, which reached as the main target group mainly Chinese exiles. In the publishing trends he gives the works by international authors of modernity, such as Susan Sontag, Václav Havel and Paul Celan out in Chinese. Since the Frankfurt Book Fair 2009, his essays are also increasingly published in German translation. On the occasion of the awarding of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to imprisoned Liu Xiaobo the book The Freedom published Bei Ling sacrificed - the biography of the Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. In spring 2012 appear " Reported. Via China " his memories of Suhrkamp Verlag, which has Bei Ling at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2011 presented to the public.
