Beibut Shumenov

Beibut Schumenow (Cyrillic Бейбут Шуменов; born August 19, 1983 in Shymkent ) is a Kazakhstani professional boxer and current WBA heavyweight champion in the light heavyweight division.

As an amateur he won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 22th Asian Amateur Boxing Championships in 2004 in the Philippines and was thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens 2004. There, he won his first fight against Poland Aleksy Kuziemski, but lost already his second fight against the Turks Ihsan Yildirim Tarhan.

Schumenov was a professional boxer in 2007 and peaked in the following two years, several regional titles, but failed 15 August 2009 at the WBA world title by points defeat to Gabriel Campillo. In the rematch on 29 January 2010, however, he defeated Campillo by points victory and became the new WBA heavyweight champion in the light heavyweight division. This title he defended 23 July 2010 by points victory against Viacheslav Uzelkov.

On January 8, 2011 Schumenow should compete against the WBO champion Juergen Braehmer in Shymkent to a unification. Due to a gastrointestinal illness from Brähmer the fight was but four days earlier canceled.

Instead Schumenov defended his title on January 8, 2011, compared to replacement opponent William Joppy by Ko in round 6 On 29 July 2011 he defended the title by TKO in round 9 against Danny Santiago.
