Beirut Vilayet

The Vilayet of Beirut ( Ottoman ولاية بيروت, Turkish Beyrut Vilayeti ) was an administrative management unit ( province, tr vilayet ) of the Ottoman Empire. It was built in 1888 from the coastal areas of the vilayet of Syria, to celebrate the new importance of the thriving capital of Beirut, which had recorded significant growth in the preceding years. It was from the vilayet Syria in the east, surrounded the Vilayet of Aleppo in the north, the independent Sanjak of Jerusalem in the south and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

Prior to the First World War, the area was awarded the Sykes- Picot Agreement in 1916 France. France finally conquered the Turkish territory in this war. 1920, the area was the French League of Nations Mandate for Syria and Lebanon incorporated and converted into the new state of Great Lebanon.
