Belay device
Backup devices are used in climbing to secure the climber. You ermöglichem the belayer situational handling and control of the safety rope. A backup device must support in general, the following four functions:
- Cable to spend - when Vorstiegssichern ( security cable from the bottom)
- Rope catch - the top-rope back up and when you save a Nachsteigers ( safety rope from above)
- Keep a fall or a hanging in the rope climber
- Controlled lowering of the climber
Most backup devices can also be roped themselves.
There are various types of security devices. The earlier - before the widespread introduction of modern security equipment - common and today especially in multi-pitch routes still encountered type of backup is backing up by HMS carabiners and half hitch. Nowadays, due to the ease of use are often variants of the Tubes and increasingly so-called semi-automatic - Belay Devices with automatic locking function - used. Backup devices such as ATC or tube are relatively easy to use and more comfortable to use than HMS, since the braking effect only occurs when the brake or load rope is under tension. At HMS the rope end which is sought, must be introduced into the HMS node.
