Belfonte is a census -designated place northwest of Fort Smith in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, near the eastern border of the state. The area had the U.S. Census in 2000 426 inhabitants. By the year 2007, the population has increased to 490.

Geography

The district comprises of Belfonte 20.5 km ². It is close to the border with Arkansas at Oklahoma State Route 101 in the vicinity of Belfonte is the exit to the cabins Sequoyahs, the inventor of the Cherokee script.

Belfonte is located between Short and Long, about 20 kilometers northwest of Fort Smith. The census area is largely forested and already a part of the forests of the Ozarks in the north. It has an average height of 244 m above sea level.

50.2 % of the population is of Indian origin, 42.3 % are White. The annual per capita income of 15,786 U.S. dollars. 9.9 % of the population lives below the poverty line.

Education

Belfonte has only a primary school, the Belfonte Elementary School, which is also attended by students from Muldrow. The Cherokee Nation regularly provides grants for school available because very many students who are taught here are from Cherokee families. In the first half of 2009, there are 48 students.
