Bella Lewitzky

Bella Lewitzky ( born January 13, 1913 in Los Angeles, † 16 July 2004 in Pasadena ) was an American dancer and choreographer.

Biography

Bella Lewitzky was a daughter of Russian immigrants and grew up in a colony in the Mojave Desert, and later on a ranch in San Bernardino on. After completing high school she moved to Los Angeles and studied at a prestigious ballet school. In 1934 she joined the Lester Horton 's Company, where she learned to her future husband, Newell Taylor Reynolds, know. After the war Lewitzky founded with Lester Horton dance theater with an integrated dance school in Los Angeles (Dance Theater of Los Angeles ). In the early 1950s, she worked as a choreographer in the film, Baghdad (1949 ), Tripoli (1950) and The Slave of the Amazons (1950). After the birth of her daughter, Nora Reynolds ( born in 1955 ) she taught at the Idyllwild Arts Academy dance and expression. In 1966 Lewitzky the Lewitzky Dance Company, under its artistic direction, the company became one of the leading dance schools of modern dance in the world.
