Bellerofonte Castaldi

Bellerofonte Castaldi (* 1580 in Collegara at Modena; † September 27, 1649 in Modena) was an Italian composer, lutenist, poet and adventurer.

Life

Castaldi was probably 1580 (or 1581) in Collegara, about five kilometers southeast of Modena, was born. He came from a fairly wealthy family, which allowed him to make journeys through Italy and Germany and otherwise to give the art-loving idleness. He was considered an adventurer and was well known as a virtuosic theorbo player, singer and composer for his controversial and satirical poems.

He spent most of his life wealthy in Venice and Modena. However, he became embroiled repeatedly in Handel. He was shot while trying to avenge the death of his brother in the left foot, so that he limped for the rest of his life. Because of his sharp tongue, he was exiled by Pope Paul V in Rome.

Towards the end of his life his family was during a border dispute between the Papal State and the Duchy of Modena completely destroyed, Castaldi died completely ruined in 1649.

Work

In addition to the compositional work Castaldi also wrote the lyrics to his songs himself He also claimed the invention of the Tiorbino, a small form of the theorbo in claim ( "mia invenzione novella " ), the Capricci are considered only surviving composition for this instrument.
