Bello Bouba Maigari

Bello Bouba Maigari (* 1947) is a Cameroonian politician. He was on 6 November 1982 to 22 August 1983 Prime Minister of his country. He is currently the Minister of State for Post and Telecommunications and party president of the Union pour la Démocratie et le National Progres (UNDP, National Union for Democracy and Progress).

Maigari was born in Baschéo in northern Cameroon. From 1972 to 1975 he was Secretary General of the Army Ministry. On June 30, 1975, he was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the presidential office until he was appointed in January 1982 to the Minister of Economy and Planning. Following the resignation of President Ahmadou Ahidjo Maigari was Prime Minister in 1982 under the new President Paul Biya in November. After the clashes between Ahidjo and Biya led to that Ahidjo went into exile in 1983, Maigari was however dismissed as prime minister and replaced by Luc Ayang. 1984 went into exile in Nigeria Maigari, after a coup d'etat against Biya had failed.

In May 1990, Maigari was in Paris, the founding of a new party, the UNDP, known. After the party had been legally recognized, he returned in 1991 to Cameroon back. He became party president in 1992 and elected in the same year in the National Assembly. In 1992 he went to in the presidential elections, was behind Biya and the candidate of the Social Democratic Front, John Fru Ndi, but only a third party. In some provinces, however, he reached a majority of votes. Maigari and Ndi accused Biya against electoral fraud and tried in vain to annul the election by the Supreme Court of the country.

Maigari was again elected to the National Assembly in 1997. Although the presidential elections were boycotted in the same year by his party, Maigari took in December 1997 to a post in Biya's Cabinet and was Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Development. In the 2002 elections Maigari lost his parliamentary seat after his party received a total of only one seat in the National Assembly. Some party members demanded Maigari then abandon cooperation with the ruling party RDPC and to join the opposition. However Maigari decided to remain against this resistance in the government on the ground that, to be able to do more in this way. Also in the 2004 presidential elections, he supported Biya. After the election Maigari was appointed Minister of State for Post and Telecommunications.
