Belz (Morbihan)

Belz is a commune with 3508 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. It is the administrative center of the canton of the same name.

Geography

The municipality is bordered on the northeast by the municipality Locoal- Mendon, in the south on the community Erdeven, in the southwest on the community Étel and the west and north to the river of the same Étel, a coastal river that widens at the mouth of a branched bay.

From the western district Kergo the suspension bridge over the River Pont Lorois Étel in the community Plouhinec. In the north of the parish are in the river several islands, one of which Ile Saint Cado is connected by a stone bridge with the hamlet of Saint Cado.

History

From prehistoric times can be found in the municipality of several dolmens and menhirs.

According to legend, a native of Wales St Cadoc in the 6th century AD on the Ile de Saint Cado settled and founded a hermitage. This was inherited by the monks of Quimperle in 1089 and built it from a priory, which developed into a major center of pilgrimage. The current chapel is dated to the 11th to 12th centuries.

Economy and infrastructure

The community has a small urban center with the main shopping street Rue du Général de Gaulle, the Town Hall and the Church of Saint- Saturnin.

In marked by the tidal currents flow Étel extensive oyster farming facilities are located.

Traffic

Belz is connected via the D9 after Hennebont in the northwest and on the D22 to Auray in the east to the French highway system ( N24, N165 ). The D781 provides the connection of the coastal towns of Port Louis in the west to Locmariaquer in the southeast.

The nearest train station with intercity transport connection is located in Auray, closest airport is Lorient Bretagne Sud. Bus service ( Monday to Saturday ) exist to Lorient, Auray, Port Louis and Carnac - La Trinité- sur -Mer.
