Ben Knapen

Hubertus Petrus Maria ( Ben ) Knapen ( born January 6, 1951 in Kaatsheuvel ) is a Dutch journalist, historian and politician. He was from 1990 to 1996 editor of the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad. Since 14 October 2010 he is for the Christian Democratisch Appèl (CDA ) Secretary of State for Development Cooperation and the European Union Affairs in the Cabinet Rutte I.

Life

From the house historian Knapen worked from the early eighties for the NOS Journaal and the NRC Handelsblad as a correspondent in Bonn and Washington. In 1990 he became the successor of Wout Woltz chief editor at NRC Handelsblad, after he had already been a deputy for three years. Under Knapen went in July 1995, the sheet as the first of the national newspapers in the Netherlands and reached online at this time also his edition zenith.

1996 left Knapen, the NRC Handelsblad and became director of public relations at Philips, and was succeeded by Folkert Jensma. However, he moved in 1999 to the Executive Committee of PCM Uitgevers, editor of NRC Handelsblad. The following years were unfavorable, lost the national dailies position of the Group to support, further, some Internet projects set for failure. 2005 Knapen left the Group Executive Board and returned as a correspondent in Jakarta for the NRC Handelsblad back to journalism. A year earlier Knapen was also included in the Foundation's management of the University of Tilburg. From 1 January 2008 to 14 October 2010, he was a member of Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR ) and also a university professor at the Radboud University Nijmegen.

Knapen has written several books in which he ( the Federal Republic of Germany in the early eighties ) ( the Netherlands relations with the Soviet Union 1917-42 ) left his journalistic fields incorporated and its origin as a historian.

Ben Knapen belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.
