Benary reaction

Benary of the reaction refers to a chemical reaction which is used in the synthesis of α, β -unsaturated ketones from dialkylamino vinyl ketones. The reaction is named after its discoverer Erich Benary.

The starting compound is reacted with a Grignard reagent in 1,4-addition. Hydrolysis of this intermediate provides the elimination of a dialkylated amine, a α, β -unsaturated ketone.

The reaction proceeds even in the use of esters and ketones instead of aldehydes often positive. However, it has a limited field of application.
