Benedict Akwuegbu

Benedict Akwuegbu ( born November 3, 1974 in Lagos ) is a former Nigerian football player at the position of a striker.

Club career

Akwuegbu began his career at the age of 15 Nigerian first division Highlanders. In 1991 he moved to Europe for French Ligue 1 club RC Lens.

In 1992, after a season in France, Akwuegbu Lens left in the direction of Belgium, where he spent the next six years. He played one year in the second division Eendracht Aalst three years thereafter at KRC Harelbeke with which he ascended into the Jupiler League 1995. In this league Akwuegbu managed 17 goals in season 2. He then moved to second division side SV Zulte -Waregem, which reached fourth place with him and failed in the play-offs for the first division at KVC Westerlo. Akwuegbu had achieved in only 16 games in this season nine goals.

Then he was obliged in 1998 for $ 500,000 by the Austrian first division side Grazer AK, with whom he reached the third place and the UEFA Cup in the 1998/99 season. Unforgettable is his performance for the fans of the Graz clubs in the UEFA Cup 1998 /99. In the home game of Graz against AS Monaco of Nigerians scored two goals against the goalkeeper of the newly crowned world champions France, Fabien Barthez. One of the hits was a ball through the legs, also called " pickle " in Austrian football jargon. In 2000 he won the Austrian Cup with the Athletikern. With the exception of a season on loan at 2002 Chinese club Shenyang Yinde Akwuegbu was until the end of 2004 season at GAK under contract. In the championship season 2003/ 04 he had his place but lost in the fall season a few missions and it was awarded in the winter break at the FC Kärnten.

He subsequently worked in Austria as well as in Germany and Switzerland Akwuegbu moved in 2006 to the Chinese club Tianjin Teda, it was followed by other stations in the Far East until he was finally out of contract in July 2007. In July 2008 Akwuegbu moved to China to Beijing Hongdeng. Just six years later, in January 2009, he returned to Austria, where he signed a contract with the SVL Flavia Solva. After seven games and two goals he left in May of 2009 the club. In November 2009, he came under the English Football Conference at Basingstoke Town. After two games of the season with a scoring he was re-opened in May 2010.

Career in the national team

Akwuegbu was nominated in 1989 as the youngest player in the Nigerian U-16 national team for the U-18 World Cup. He played four years in the U -20 team alongside players like Nwankwo Kanu and Taribo West.

For the senior team Akwuegbu was first nominated in 1999. When Afrikacup 2000 he came in the preliminary round to three inserts. He stood in 2002 both at the African Cup as well as at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea in the Nigerian squad.

Benedict Akwuegbu has a brother Emmanuel Akwuegbu, which was also active as a football player.
