Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia

Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia, OFM ( born August 10, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, † April 30, 2008 in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil) was Bishop of Jataí in Brazil.

Life

Benedito Domingos Vito Coscia studied after his high school graduation at St. Francis College in Brooklyn from 1943 to 1945 at St. Bonaventure College philosophy in Olean, New York, and from 1945 to 1949 theology at Holy Name College in Washington, DC In parallel, he graduated from 1945 to 1948, a master's degree in Latin American history.

He joined in 1943 the Congregation of the Franciscan in and received on 11 June 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders in Washington DC From 1950 to 1957 he worked as a vicar in the Brazilian Anápolis, then as a priest and rain at the local seminary. From 1957 to 1961 he was a teacher in Pires do Rio.

1961 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. Bishop of the Diocese of Jataí in the state of Goiás in west-central Brazil. He received his episcopal consecration on September 21, 1961 in Brooklyn, the Archbishop of Brooklyn, Bryan Joseph McEntegart; Co-consecrators were Tomás Roberto Manning, Bishop of Coroico, and Eustace John Smith, Vicar Apostolic of Beirut. His episcopal motto was " Pax et Bonum ".

Coscia was responsible for the religious education of children and adolescents in the Região Oeste Central (Region Midwest ) in Brazil, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Distrito Federal Brasília. In addition, he was a member of the Commission, which built a new site for the Brazilian Bishops' Conference cnbb ( Conferência Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil ). He participated in the Second Vatican Council of 1962 until 1965.

1999 his resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II. Until 2000 he was employed as Apostolic Administrator in Jataí.

Coscia was a Legum Doctor ( LL.D. ) ( Doctor of Laws ) of St. Francis College, Brooklyn, and St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, honored.

He was buried in the constructed during his reign Cathedral of Jataí.
