Benizelos Rouphos

Venizelos ( Mpenizelos ) Rouphos (Greek Μπενιζέλος Ρούφος, * 1795 in Patras, † March 18, 1868 in Patras ) was a Greek politician and Prime Minister.

Independence fighter and family

The son of the freedom fighter Athanasios Kanakaris was named after his grandfather coming from Sicily Benizelo Roufus. His sons Athanassios Kanakaris- Rouphos and Georgios Rouphos were also Mayor of Patras as well as ministers. His son Angelos Rouphos was a deputy and was subject in 1899 in the election for Mayor of Patras his older brother Athanassios Kanakaris- Rouphos.

During the struggle for independence from 1821 to 1828 he was also a freedom fighter in a company in Patras. In the reign of Ioannis Kapodistrias in 1828 he first governor of Elis and later of Syros.

Political career

1832 Rouphos was appointed senator. 1835 he was appointed government adviser. He later became Minister of the Interior in the government of Georgios Koundouriotis ( March-October 1848). Furthermore, he was Secretary of State from time to time.

Between 1855 and 1858 he was mayor of his home town of Patras. During his tenure as mayor, he laid the foundation stone for the community hospital and waived in part on its income by an aqueduct, as well as to build roads.

After the deposition of King Otto I, he was from January 30 to October 30, 1863 along with Konstantinos Kanaris and Dimitrios Voulgaris a triumvirate to exercise the regency. He was also from the May 10, 1863 for the first time Prime Minister.

From 9 February to 14 March 1865 and 11 December 1865 to 21 June 1866 he was again Prime Minister.
