Alexandros Koumoundouros

Alexandros Koumoundouros (Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Κουμουνδούρος; * 1817 in Zarnata ( Mani ( Peloponnese ) ); † 26 February 1883 in Athens ) was a Greek politician and Prime Minister.

Family and studies

He was the son of Spirodonas - Galanis Koumoundouros, the Bey during the last period of Ottoman rule in Mani. After the end of the Greek Revolution (1821-1829), he went to school to Nafplion. Then he studied law at the University of Athens. In 1841 he took part in the revolution in Crete, though he was of the opinion that this was a pointless exercise at this time. He later became public prosecutor at the tribunal court of Kalamata. In 1843 he married Ennra Greolis, by whom he had four children.

Political career

Member of Parliament and President

Koumoundouros began his political career in 1853 with the election of deputies of the National Assembly ( Vouli ton Ellinon ). There he represented the interests of the constituency of Messinia. In 1855 he was elected President of the National Assembly.

Minister

A year later he became in 1856 Minister of Economic Affairs in the first cabinet of Dimitrios Voulgaris. This office he held from 1857 to 1862 also held cabinet of Athanasios Miaoulis.

After the deposition of King Otto I on October 23, 1862 Prime Minister Voulgaris appointed him Minister of Justice of the incumbent until February 21, 1863 a transitional government. After the parliamentary elections of 1863 he was Minister of Justice and took over after the necessary due to political instability early elections in 1864, the Religion and Ministry of Education. Later, he was eventually Interior.

Ten times Prime Minister

On March 14, 1865 Koumoundouros became Prime Minister for the first time. This office he retained initially to 1 November 1865 and then, after two very short transitional government of Epaminondas and Dimitrios Voulgaris Deligiorgis on November 18, 1865 Prime Minister again. However, he was forced to resign from that office also even been a week later on November 25, 1865 again.

After winning the general election of 1866 he was on December 30, 1866 for the third time prime minister. His term lasted this time until 1 January 1868.

On December 15, 1870 was his fourth appointment as Prime Minister. In his reigning until November 9 1871 Cabinet he took over both the inner and the War Department.

In August 1875, he was re-elected President of the National Assembly. However, he was already October 27, 1875 after winning the general elections for the fifth time a Prime Minister in office until December 8, 1876 Government.

Of the three held in 1876 elections Koumoundouros won two, so that he became Prime Minister for the sixth time already on 13 December 1876. This office he held until 10 March 1877. From 1 to June 7, 1877 and September 14, 1877 to November 2, 1878 he was again Prime Minister.

After the victory in the elections to the National Assembly, he was again on November 7, 1878 Prime Minister of a reigning until March 22, 1880 Government.

For the last and tenth time Koumondouros was dated 25 October 1880 to the March 15, 1882 Prime Minister. During this last term of office at the same time as him, he achieved his greatest political success after the establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey in 1881 reached the port of Thessaly and the present Regional District Arta to the Greek mainland. Shortly after the connection he called a general election, to allow the new territories the posting of deputies in the National Assembly. Contrary to expectations, these deputies elected the candidate of the opposition to the president of the National Assembly. For this reason Koumoundouros occurred on 15 March 1882 by his office as prime minister and at the same time took leave of the policy.
