Benjamin Dwight Allen

Benjamin Dwight Allen ( born February 16, 1831 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, † March 4, 1914 in Wellesley ( Massachusetts)) was an American organist and composer.

Allen was in Worcester, Mass.. Formed. He was here from 1845 teacher and organist, and from 1857 to 1894 organist and choirmaster of the Union Congregational Church. He founded in 1858 the Worcester Music Festival. From 1871 to 1876 he also taught at the Conservatory and the University of Boston. From 1894 he headed the music department of the College in Wisconsin and eventually worked from 1902 to 1905 as organist at the Manhattan Congregational Church in New York.

Allen composed anthems and songs, of which up to now only a small part was published in print. Its main merit is his teaching, with which he promoted the development of musical life in the United States decisively.
