Benjamin Franklin Meyers

Benjamin Franklin Meyers (* July 6, 1833 in New Centerville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, † August 11 1918 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Benjamin Meyers attended Somerset Academy and Jefferson College in Canonsburg. After a subsequent law degree in 1855 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1864 and 1900 he took part in a total of seven Democratic National Convention as a delegate. In 1864 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. He also gave out in Bedford and later in Harrisburg newspapers.

In the congressional elections of 1870, Meyers was in the 16th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Republican John Cessna took on 4 March 1871 that he had beaten in the election. Since he lost in 1872 against Cessna, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1873.

Between 1886 and 1891 Benjamin Meyers served as postmaster in Harrisburg. In this city he published the newspaper Daily Star Independent. He was also involved with the local public supply. He died on August 11, 1918 in Harrisburg, where he was also buried.
