Benjamin Hornigold

Captain Benjamin Hornigold (* unknown; † 1719 before Mexico) was privateer on behalf of the British Crown in the War of Spanish Succession, 1716-1717 as a pirate active later pirate hunter.

Life

Captain Hornigold left New Providence along with " Blackbeard " Edward Thatch in his crew. He captured a sloop, which he imputed Thatch. They plundered in 1717 six ships off the American coast and went to the Caribbean on the prowl. On November 28 1717 she captured a French ship full of gold, precious stones, slaves and other booty, the La Concorde, under the command of Captain Pierre Dosset. Hornigold gave the La Concorde to Blackbeard, who renamed Queen Anne's Revenge. Then went their separate ways. Four crew members of the La Concorde joined Blackbeard. More were exposed by Blackbeard on the Grenadine island of Bequia. The rest of the crew, including the chef, the surgeon and the pilot were pressed into service by Blackbeard. The total value of the booty amounted to over 1,000 pounds.

Blackbeard went to America and to New Providence Hornigold. When Woodes Rogers, also former privateer, was appointed governor of the Bahamas, Hornigold accepted the offer of the Royal Pardons. Rogers Hornigold commissioned to hunt other pirates, among them John Auger and Charles Vane. In 1719 Hornigold was sent to Mexico on a trading voyage. Yet his ship ran aground on a reef far from the coast and sank. The entire crew and Hornigold themselves were killed.
