Benjamin Peter Gloxin

Benjamin Peter Gloxin (* 1765, † 1794) was a German botanist and physician. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Gloxin ".

Life

Gloxin lived in Colmar and employed as a botanist mainly with plants of the genus Martynia and related genera of Gemsenhorngewächse ( Martyniaceae ). He described the kind Martynia proboscidea, later as a synonym for Martynia louisianica turned out. By Albert Thellung Gloxins species name in 1912 has become the new genus name and the plant is now called Proboscidea louisianica.

The French botanist Charles Louis L' Héritier de Brut Elle named in 1785 in honor Gloxin a genus of Gesneriad Gloxinia. As " Gloxinia " is usually the originally from Brazil Sinningia speciosa offered in the flower trade, which was assigned to the genus Gloxinia earlier.
