Benjamin Say

Benjamin Say ( born August 28, 1755 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † April 23, 1813 ) was an American politician. In the years 1808 and 1809 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Benjamin Say visited the Friend schools and then studied until 1780 medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In this city he practiced then as doctor and pharmacist. At times, he also took part in the War of Independence. In 1787 he was one of the founders of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Between 1791 and 1809 he served as treasurer of this educational institution. Say was also a member of the Pennsylvania Prison Society and president of the Pennsylvania Humane Society. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party. Between 1799 and 1801 he was a member of the Senate of Pennsylvania.

Following the resignation of Mr Joseph Clay Say was at the due election for the first seat of Pennsylvania as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 16 November 1808. After a re-election, he could remain until his resignation in June 1809 Congress. After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Benjamin Say is no longer politically have appeared. He died on April 23, 1813 in Philadelphia. His son Thomas (1787-1827) was a renowned entomologist.
