Bergen School (art)

The Bergen School ( Bergense School) was a group of Dutch painters.

The group was formed in 1915 in Bergen ( North Holland ) by the French painter Henri Le Fauconnier. This was influenced in his work of Paul Cézanne. The Art of Bergen School is a reaction to Impressionism. The coloring of many of these painters is simple, often bleak with many gray and brown tones. Important Dutch from this group are: Leo Gestel, whose monumental, influenced by the Flemish expressionism art often acts, horses and workers represent, and Matthieu Wiegman (1881-1971), who managed primarily religious art and in the Netherlands as the tone in this area applies. Also, the early work of Charley Toorop belongs to this style.

An important patron of this artist was the art collector Piet Boendermaker ( 1877-1947 ).
