Bergschrund

The bergschrund is the gap between running ice of a glacier and the non-flowing ice that is frozen to the rock. Such bergschrund may form beneath ridges and walls that protrude from a glacier.

In contrast to "normal" crevasses of bergschrund is not produced in the midst of the flowing ice, but on the edge. The bergschrund is not to be confused with the marginal gap, which is a direct separation line (as rendered gap ) between a glacier or a snow field and the rock.

In winter, the bergschrund is often filled with avalanche debris from the overlying mountain flank. With increasing snowmelt in the summer of bergschrund, however, is often difficult to overcome.
