History

In the 12th and 13th centuries, probably built by the Counts of Saarbrücken on the basis of the present castle, a water castle. This was mentioned in 1333 for the first time as "Fixed Zabern by Lantecken ". In 1385 it fell to the Electoral Palatinate and went in 1410 due to succession in the possession of the Palatinate- Zweibrücken.

In 1525, destroyed insurgent Lorraine peasants who had taken the city, the castle complex. Ludwig II of Palatinate -Zweibrücken built the system back on, now in the form of a Castle castle, that is a mixture of fortification and unpaved castle. In 1532 the south wing was completed, who catches the eye because of the two round towers, which served his time as turrets today. The castle was protected at that time by a moat.

In 1676 there was an attack by French troops largely destroyed by a fire, but subsequently ( 1720-1725 ) rebuilt by the Swedish- Zweibrücken Planning Director. 1794 the French conquered the castle, which was auctioned in 1803 as a so-called national property. Around this time, the surrounding moat was filled. The castle came into the possession of the city Bergzabern, suffered significant damage in a fire in 1909 and was then used as a school until 1984 the seat of the municipal administration Bad Bergzabern after extensive renovation.
