Berlin British School

The Berlin British School is an international English-language day school for children from age 3 to 18 in Berlin's Charlottenburg -Wilmersdorf. The private school follows the British National Curriculum by the end of Key Stage 3 and then taught the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education - corresponds to the intermediate school leaving certificate ) program to 16 years. Subsequently, the school follows the International Baccalaureate diploma program until the age of 18 years. The Lower School, the kindergarten and preschool, as well as the high school of Berlin British School are idyllically located in the Grunewald, the elementary school is close to the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Support of the school is the Berlin British School eV as a charitable organization.

History

In the early 1990s, after the Allies had left Berlin, a group of diplomats from the British Embassy and interested professional wanted to continue the British traditions. In the premises of the former military school - Charlottenburg First School - an elementary school and kindergarten with 84 children was opened from 23 nations. 1999 moved the kindergarten to the Grunewald. A daycare, kindergarten and preschool classes in the forest was home to the youngest members of the school community. A year later, the high school on the grounds of a former located underneath Landschulheim. Both campuses are located in a conservation area. In 2009 the high school was expanded with a library and science building.

Architecture and Buildings

The Middle School ( primary school ) is in a one-story building in Berlin -Westend near the Olympic Stadium. The building dates back to the 1950s and was previously used by the British military school. A small gym is part of the building, the children share the playground with the neighboring primary school. The Senior School in Grunewald consists of several small buildings scattered on the forest land. The subjects were summarized in the buildings according to disciplines. The funded with money from the foundation of the state German Class Lottery Freymuth - Brumby Building was completed in 2009 and houses the library, physics and chemistry laboratories, and the Department of English. The building was built as a passive house. A sports field is part of the Senior School premises.

Pedagogical work and equipment

In the Lower School, the kindergarten, the three -to six- year-old children according to the curriculum of the Foundation Stage ( Early Childhood Education ) and the first school year are taught. The program is divided into six areas of learning: communication, language and literacy, knowledge and understanding of the world, physical development, creative development, personal, social and emotional development as well as problem solving, reasoning and numeracy. The children are introduced playfully on a fixed daily schedule in the territories, provided times for playing and eating together.

The Middle School is the primary school for children aged 6 to 11 years (grade 2-6 ). It is based on the kindergarten, preschool and first grade. The school follows the English National Curriculum with appropriate modifications, to mediate intercultural understanding.

In the Senior School, students in grades 7 are taught to 9 ( Key Stage 3) in accordance with the National Curriculum of England and Wales, which has been adapted to the needs of an international student community and amended accordingly. In grades 7-11, the school is not academically selective oriented, but we insist that students have at least a working knowledge of English. In grades 10 and 11 ( Key Stage 4), is prepared in up to ten subjects in a two-year training course at the conclusion of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (comparable to the Intermediate School Certificate IGCSE, ). Students who have passed the IGCSE, then 12 and 13 can visit the grades that prepares for the International Baccalaureate diploma program are prepared ( International Abitur degree program ), one of the international universities and recognized also in Germany conclusion.

The two-year IB program is divided into 6 compartments, from which each student must choose each a specialist: First and second foreign language, social studies, experimental sciences, mathematics and computer science, art and music. Each student also has to write an essay, participate in extra-curricular activities, including sports and charitable work (CAS ), and the interdisciplinary Theory of Knowledge ( ToK ) that is intended to give the methods of acquiring knowledge the student.

Children can be encouraged as part of a support plan that is tailored to individual needs of a student. The support plan is developed in cooperation with classroom teachers, the subject teacher, the teaching assistants or the coordinator of the funding measure.

Additional offers

The school offers a variety of projects and consortia, during lunch or after school, such as homework help, music projects, craft courses and sports. The music teacher studying instrumental concerts, choir concerts and musicals one with students of different grade levels. Daily or weekly excursions are also organized for the students.

An after-school care is offered after 15:00 clock bis 18:00 clock.

After the British model of each child wears a school uniform during classes and sports. According to the British model the house system is organized. Teachers and students are assigned to the four houses. This system will serve to strengthen the team spirit of old boundaries.

The parents patrons, the so-called Parent - Teacher Association organizes fundraising events to support the school. Every summer there is a summer celebration in which large sums for the purchase of playground equipment, school kitchen equipment or musical instruments are taken.

When German International Schools tournaments ( GISST ) the BBS regularly takes part in sports competitions among the international schools throughout Germany. Every year the school organizes cross-country race in Grunewald.

The yearbook can all events, the excursions of the students as well as other larger and smaller results pass in review.

Charity: the students themselves and a charitable group within the school collect donations to uniform free days or at other events for children in Africa and a hospice in Berlin. Christmas trees were placed with the wishes of needy children at Christmas time at each site, which could then be met by a donation.
