Bernard de Castanet

Bernard de Castanet (* 1240 in Montpellier, † August 14, 1317 in Avignon ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

After he. Around 1262 a Dr. jur had acquired at the University of Montpellier, he was archdeacon of La Fenelet, in the archdiocese of Narbonne, and archdeacon of the Cathedral of Mallorca. At the same time worked as a professor of law, he was chaplain in 1266 by Pope Gregory X, Auditor of the Apostolic Palace and the Roman Rota. The elevation to the Archdeacon of Narbonne was given him.

Collected on March 7, 1276 as Bishop of Albi, he laid there on August 15, 1282 the foundation stone of a new cathedral. After the cathedral chapter in 1297 converted into a community of secular priests, he founded a Dominican convent in Albi. On behalf of the king, he turned in 1297 with a request for the canonization of King Louis IX. of France to the Pope.

From 1307 to 1308 there was a case against him at the papal curia, where he was accused of simony, various legal offenses and irregularities. As the process went against him, he was transferred on 30 July 1308 the lower bishopric of Le Puy.

Pope John XXII. got him on December 17, 1316, Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina.

His grave is located in the Cathedral of Avignon.
