Bernardo Segura

Bernardo Segura Rivera ( born February 11, 1970 in San Mateo Atenco, Mexico) is a Mexican athlete. At a height of 1.75 m his competition weight is 62 kg.

Bernardo Segura presented on 7 May 1994 in the Norwegian Fana with 1:17:25,6 hrs a world record in the 20,000 m Track Walk on who still has inventory in 2006. Segura is one of the few goers, whose personal best is better than on the road on the track.

In international competitions in the 20 km road walk the track record of Bernardo Segura is mixed. He never came in a total of five appearances at the World Championships to the finish. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta Segura finished in 1:20:23 hours in third place 16 seconds behind the winner Jefferson Perez from Ecuador and 7 seconds behind Ilya Markov from Russia.

After a victory at the Pan American Games in 1999 his greatest triumph was to follow in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He fought a thrilling duel with the Poland Robert Korzeniowski and won by a narrow margin against the Poles. Then Segura went with the Mexican flag on the lap of honor. After this victory lap him the Mexican President congratulated by telephone to his Olympic victory, while the disqualification of Segura was announced because of unclean gait in the stadium.

Robert Korzeniowski was only because of this disqualification for the first walker, the one Olympic gold medal in both the 20 km walk and in the 50 km Walk succeeded. And the Athletics IAAF discussed whether one should emphasize walking because of questionable Gehrichterentscheide from the program. It was agreed that never again Gehrichter in hindsight or even on the home stretch to make a disqualification. Bernardo Segura, the Olympic champion for a quarter of an hour, this was of little use. Even after 2000, his track record was modest. A second place in the Pan American Games in 2003 are facing disqualification in most major championships, as well as the task at the 2004 Olympic Games.
