Bernardo Tanucci

Bernardo Tanucci ( born February 20, 1698 Stia in Tuscany, † April 29, 1783 in Naples) was a Neapolitan statesman.

Tanucci was first legal scholar at the University of Pisa. Charles III. convened Tanucci after his accession to power of Naples in 1735 in his circle of advisers. In 1752 he was appointed Minister of Justice, Minister for Foreign Affairs and later Kronminister. When Charles became king of Spain in 1758, Tanucci IV was elected chairman of the regency council for the underaged Ferdinand

Tanucci was connected to the ideas of the Enlightenment. Among other things, he brought administrative and judicial reforms on the way, limiting the privileges of the nobility and clergy. In particular, the Catholic Church stood Tanucci in conflict. During his reign he sent cancel numerous monasteries and 1773 expel the Jesuits. After the marriage of Ferdinand with Maria Carolina of Austria the new queen began to Tanuccis position of power to act, reaching his overthrow in 1776, after some of his reforms were withdrawn.
