Bernat Joan i Marí

Bernat Joan i Marí ( born February 22, 1960 in Sant Jordi, Ibiza / Spain ) is a Spanish high school teacher, writer and politician ( ERC) and was from 2004 to 2007 Member of the European Parliament ( Greens / EFA).

Joan i Marí PhD in philosophy and is Professor of Catalan Catalan language and literature. He has published both short stories and novels and dramatic texts as well as numerous sociolinguistic essays, especially on the subject of language and nation. He also pursued a political career in the Catalano- left nationalist party Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya ( ERC). 1993-1996 he was the Vice President, and later Chairman of the Regional Council of the party in the Balearic Islands.

In the European elections in 2004 Bernat Joan was the top candidate of the ERC -led party alliance de los Pueblos Europe ( Europe of peoples ). He moved into the European Parliament, where he joined the Group of the Greens / EFA joined since the ERC of the European Free Alliance, a pan-European alliance of regional parties consulted. He was a member of the Committee on Culture and Education and was a deputy member of the Committee on Development.

In December 2006, Joan was involved in the fictional reportage Bye Bye Belgium, announcing a purported secession of the Flemish part of the country on Belgian television. Joan congratulated in the Flemish its alleged independence.

In June 2007, Joan retired from the European Parliament, and left his seat on Mikel Irujo of the Basque- linksregionalistischen party Eusko Alkartasuna (EA ), who had taken the second place on the list of Europe de los Pueblos.
