Bernd Mutzelburg

Bernd Mützelburg ( born January 17, 1944 in Mainz ) is a former German diplomat.

He was from 2006 to 2009 Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in India and of 16 February 2009 to March 24, 2010 Special Representative of the Foreign Office for Afghanistan and Pakistan. After the change of government in 2009, the new Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle Reserve left him initially to prepare for the London Conference on Afghanistan on 28 January 2010 at the office. As the successor to the Federal Cabinet appointed on 24 March 2010, Ambassador Michael Steiner.

Career

Mützelburg did his military service as a reserve officer candidate in the Bundeswehr. After studying law at the Universities of Mainz and Marburg Bernd Mützelburg studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston and in 1974 acquired the academic degree of "Master of Arts" ( MA).

After joining the Foreign Service in 1972, initially followed by use as Private Secretary to the Minister of State Karl Moersch (FDP) in the Foreign Office.

From 1975 to 1978 Mützelburg was Deputy Head of Mission in Jamaica. After that uses the Foreign Office ( in the Office for Disarmament and Arms Control ), at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and was followed again in the Foreign Office.

From 1988 to 1991 Mützelburg was Deputy Head of the Minister's Office of the then Federal Foreign Minister Hans -Dietrich Genscher.

In 1991, he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kenya and at the same time Permanent Representative to UNEP and HABITAT. From 1995 to 1999 Mützelburg was then Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Estonia.

From August 1999 to July 2001, he was Deputy Head of the Department for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the Federal Chancellery under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. After that, he was Head of Global Issues, United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid ( GF) in the Foreign Office. His successor as head of the department was Hans -Joachim Daerr.

In November 2002 Mützelburg returned to the Federal Chancellery and this time was head of the Department for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and an advisor to the Chancellor.

After the 2005 federal election this post Christoph Heusgen and Mützelburg took was added as an ambassador for Special Affairs in the Foreign Office until he took over the leadership of the German Embassy in India in February 2006. On 16 February 2009 it appointed Foreign Minister Steinmeier in the short term as the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
