Bernold of Constance

Bernold of Constance, also: Bernold of St. Blaise or Bernoldus Constantiensis, (* 1050, † September 16, 1100 in the monastery of All Saints, Schaffhausen ) was a Benedictine and a major high medieval historian.

Life

Bernold was educated at the cathedral school of Constance Bernard of Constance. 1079 he took part in the Roman fast Synod and received in 1084 by the then Cardinal Otto of Ostia, who later became Pope Urban II ( 1088-1099 ) ordained a priest in Konstanz.

Bernold became known, who had to dodge in 1086 as a Benedictine in the monastery of St. Blaise and his last years were spent in Schaffhausen Monastery of All Saints, through his early scholastic- canonical writings, among other things, against the Nicolaitans and Simonians and the hierarchy of the Church's legal sources. His most famous work is his Bernolds world chronicle from the Creation to the year 1100, an important ( and autograph traditional ) source for the southwest of Germany at the time of the Investiture Controversy ( 1075-1122 ).

The Gregorian reform was one of their most important supporters in Bernold of Constance.
