Berthold Delbrück

Berthold Gustav Gottlieb Delbrück ( born July 26, 1842 in Putbus auf Rügen, † January 3, 1922 in Jena ) was a German linguist.

Life and work

Berthold Delbrück was a great-nephew of the politician Rudolph von Delbrück from the well-known family Delbrück. He studied from 1859, first at the University of Halle in Berlin Sanskrit philology and then. Here he was also in 1861 received his doctorate at the age of only 19 years. After his habilitation ( 1866) to syntax in the Rig Veda he settled again in Halle ( Saale) and was down at the local university lecturer in comparative linguistics. Delbrück in 1870 was appointed to the University of Jena, where he was first an associate, from 1873 Professor of Comparative Linguistics and Sanskrit, which he self-controlled active. Between 1878 and 1908, a total of five semesters Rector of the University.

With his works Delbrück founded the comparative syntax of the Indo-European language family.
