Bertil Lindblad

Bertil Lindblad (* November 26, 1895 in Örebro, † June 25, 1965 outside Saltsjöbaden ) was a Swedish astronomer and developer of the density wave theory.

From 1927 he was professor and astronomer of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and director of the Stockholm Observatory.

Lindblad made ​​important contributions to luminosity determination of stars. He conducted research mainly on the rotation of the Milky Way and the structure of the galaxies. In 1925 he presented the hypothesis of the rotation of our galaxy. This was confirmed in 1927 by Jan Hendrik Oort and his colleagues.

Awards

A crater on the Moon is named after him and bears the name Lindblad.
