Bethel is a city in the U.S. state of Alaska on the Kuskokwim River in Bethel Census Area, located in the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. It is the administrative headquarters for the 56 cities in the Yukon - Kuskokwim Delta.

History

At the site of the present Bethel there was a settlement of the Yupik named Mamterillermiut. End of the 19th century, a trading post of the Alaska Commercial Company was built. In 1880 the town had 41 residents. In 1885, a Christian mission of the Moravian Church established there. The missionaries shifted the location to the west side of the Kuskokwim River. Opened in 1905, a post office.

Infrastructure

The airport of Bethel is government-owned and is served by six passenger and five freight airlines. Based on the number of flights is the Bethel Airport is the third largest of Alaska.

At Bethel, about 16 miles, there are official roads that are not connected to a supra-regional road network.
