Bethio

The Kingdom Bethio (also Bequio, Bekio, Bitio, Betio or Beetyo ) was a small kingdom that. Decades for the lower Senegal valley, at the present border between Mauritania and Senegal, in the northwest of Biffeche In the 18th century it was referred to as " Royaume d' Oral " (French). Its capital was initially Poum, then N'Dombound finally in the 19th century Ross ( Ross Bethio also called since then ). The erstwhile fertile arable land Bethios located east of Djoudj National Park.

In the 1720s, was Erim M'Bagnick ( Yerim Mbañik ) the Brak of Waalo ( Oualo ) and Béquio Malicouri, King of the Royaume d' Oral, was his vassal. The latter seems to have been replaced by Fara Coro.

In the 18th century Maalixuri ( Malichouri ) ( Malikhuri Diop ), the famous " Prince Bethio ", legendary for its cunning, strategy changes and challenging disputes with the Kingdom Waalo and the French in Saint- Louis.

Today Prince Bethio, Abdoulaye Diop, lives in Ross- Bethio and is there a Senegalese political leader.

The name, also called Beco appears as a synonym of the island Becos occur in river delta, which is supposed to be now known as the Baba Gueye island.
