Biffeche

Biffeche or Bifeche is a small, to be called the Kingdom of area in the northwest of Senegal, near the border with Mauritania. Its center is Savoigne, located about 30 kilometers northeast of the larger coastal town of Saint- Louis.

Demography

Biffeche as the rest of northern Senegal is inhabited by the ethnic groups of the Fulani, Serer Ndut, Wolof and Moors, operate the dairy farming and irrigated agriculture. The population is predominantly Muslim, Christian and animist minorities there.

Previously European reports used the name for a different place, the small island (Isle de Bifeche ) was founded by the island N'Dar on which Saint -Louis in the river delta of the Senegal in West Africa, about two miles upstream. The Penny Cyclopaedia describes the island in 1843 as "completely covered with forest and flooded in the rainy season for the most part. "

Geography

The region is located slightly above the sea and is largely flat. Savoigne is the largest city in the region. The National Park Djoudj located nearby.

Biffeche located on an island in the Senegal River, which forms the border between Senegal and Mauritania here. The island can be found on a map on which the location Maka is clearly marked. An equivalent map N'Dar listed under the old French name Isle St. Louis, Pointe de isle de Bifeche is also recorded. On the island is Emboulan what appears to be a European variant name of the city MBoubene.

History

In the 17th century there was a chief, known as Petit Brak or Little King over a region that has been designated as Biffeche or Gangueul, with its capital at Maka. The Great Brak or Great King ruled the Kingdom Waalo, whose capital was originally Diourbel. This area was almost depopulated by the continued activity of Moorish slave catcher from the north. At times, the Petit Brak Waalo was tributary, at times allied with Bethio. In the 1720s was Béquio Malicouri, the Royaume d' Oral by Bethio, a vassal under Erim M'Bagnick the then Brak of Waalo.

Presence

Over the past four decades, the people of Biffeche has determined an American philanthropist king. The main task of this king is in fundraising and public relations. The first king of this kind was Edward Shafer of St. Louis followed by Ronald Busch Reisinger a Budweiser heir. The Reisinger family was also known as major donors in favor of the Busch- Reisinger Museum, formerly Deutsches Museum, and the collection of German art from Harvard University.
