Betty Roché

Betty Roche ( * as Mary Elizabeth Roché on 9 January 1920 in Wilmington ( Delaware), † February 16, 1999 in Pleasantville ( New Jersey)) was an American jazz singer of swing. She sang in the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Life and work

Betty Roche grew up in Atlantic City and came in 1939 to New York, where she first sang with Lee Young and then from 1941 to 1942 at the Savoy Sultans of Al Cooper. 1943/44, she was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, in which they replaced Ivie Anderson. Ellington and continued as a soloist in the title The Blues one ( from the suite Black, Brown And Beige ). 1952/53, she sang again at Ellington Your most important title in the Ellington band was Take the " A" Train, she lectured in music film Reveille With Beverly; their version of this classic had an extended scat part.

Ellington appreciated her singing style, which contained soul and bop influences, but was also influenced by Anita O'Day Under his own name Roche took in 1952 on the 78 " I Love my Lovin ' Lover" and the standard "Body and Soul"; Mid-1950s and early 1960s still followed to some albums for, inter alia, the label Bethlehem and prestige. There is particularly Charlie Parker Billie 's Bounce title to hear ( on the album Singin ' and Swingin' ) you bop singing; another number was a version of "Take the A Train ," in which she juxtaposing the title lines of over a dozen song titles in an overlong Scatpassage. After that, they no longer worked as a jazz singer. Throughout her career, Roche also took on plates with Earl Hines, Gerald Wilson and Hot Lips Page.
