Beyazıt Tower

The Beyazit Tower (Turkish: Beyazıt kulesi or Serasker kulesi ) is located in Istanbul's Fatih, in the Eminönü district, at the Beyazit Square in close proximity to the University of Istanbul. The Beyazıt Tower serves since the first building in 1749 to a fire station and as a transmission tower for the traffic on the Golden Horn.

History

The first fire watchtower in Beyazıt was built of wood in 1749. During the great fire of 1756 Cibali he burned down and was replaced by another tower on the same site. This was destroyed in the upheaval of Sultan Mahmud II, following riots in 1826. In the same year, another wooden tower was built. Was designed and built this tower by architect Krikor Amira Balyan and shortly after that of the Janissaries on fire.

1828 today, 85 meters high Beyazıtturm was built. It was built by Amira Balyan Senekerim in Ottoman style of stone and named after the Sultan Bayezid II. The stone tower on the top floor has a room with an area of ​​around 50 square meters and 13 arched windows. This room is accessible by a wooden spiral staircase with 256 steps. The Beyazıtturm was partially damaged by the earthquake of 1889 and restored in the sequence.
