Beylerbey

The Beylerbey ( Ottoman Beylerbeyi بكلربكی ) described the most important of the provincial governors in the Ottoman Empire. The word " Beylerbey " is based on the Turkish word Bey, meaning " Lord of Lords ". There are the following spelling variations: Bejlerbej, Beglerbeg or beylerbey.

History

The first Beylerbey was appointed by Sultan Murad I.. It was Lala Şahin Pasha, the Beylerbey of Rumelia. 1393 the Office of the Beylerbeys of Anatolia was established. These two Beylerbeys were at the head of all Eyalets, vilayets and sanjak of their respective sphere of influence - ie the European and Asian part of the empire. Only the viziers had a higher rank.
