Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves

The Thousand Buddha Caves Bazaklik are a complex of Buddhist cave temples dating from the 5th to the 9th century. The site is located between the cities of Turpan ( Turfan ) and Shanshan ( Loulan ) at the north-east of the Taklamakan desert near the ruins of Gaochang, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China.

The caves are at the top of a steep wall in the rocks on the west side of the Mutou Valley under the Flaming Mountains.

In the caves for about 60 well-preserved significant Buddhist murals are seen.

Late 19th and early 20th century, the city was the scene of raids by German ( Albert von Le Coq ), English ( Aurel Stein ), Japanese, and Russian expeditions.

The site was added (2-14) 1982 in the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China.
