Bhonsle

The Bhonsle were an influential Maratha dynasty in British India.

Members of the family ruled in the 17th century in Satara, Thanjavur, Nagpur and Kolhapur.

After the defeat of the Marathas in the Third Marathenkrieg the Bhonsle remained as autonomous rulers in their states in power, but acknowledged British sovereignty. Mid-19th century the rulers Bhonslefamilien died out in Satara, Nagpur and Thanjavur and were annexed by the British. Only Kolhapur remained until 1947 exist as a princely state and then joined India.
