Geography

Biak is bounded on the north by the Pacific Ocean and on the south by the Straits of Yapen. In the West Biak separates only a few meters wide strait Teluk Surendidori of the island Supiori. The island has a north-south extent of about 60 kilometers and an east- west extent of an average of about 30 kilometers. The island is surrounded by lush coral reefs off Biak and the Padaio Islands. On the south coast of the island lies Kota Biak, the main town of Biak.

The temperatures are influenced by the steep and here almost all year round same angle of the sun throughout the year almost constant and the climate is of high year-round rainfall.

Flora and Fauna

Due to the high rainfall and the favorable temperatures, the island is lush overgrown by tropical rainforest and is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species. Because of foreclosed since the early days of Biak's location (the island was probably not connected to the larger island of New Guinea) here has a number of endemic species developed, including the Biakliest. The fauna is similar in some ways to that of Australia. Ornithologists observe numerous Cockatoo and parrot species. Crowned pigeons and birds of paradise.
