Cenderawasih Bay

The Cenderawasih Bay ( Indonesian: Teluk Cenderawasih ), formerly Dutch: Geelvinkbaai, is a large bay in the north of the island of New Guinea in the Indonesian province of Papua.

The bay encompasses a coastline of over 700 km in length and up to 300 km wide. It was discovered in 1705 by the Dutch explorer Jacob Weyland, and used to be called " Geelvinkbaai ".

In Cenderawasih Bay are numerous Indonesian islands and island groups, such as the 140 km -long island Yapen and the Schouten Islands. In addition, in this bay is home to a location loyal population of whale sharks.
