Bibliothèque Publique et Universitaire (Geneva)

The Library of Geneva (French Bibliothèque de Genève ), until 2006 under the name Public University Library ( Bibliothèque publique et universitaire BPU ), is one of the oldest university libraries in Switzerland. As a working tool, founded by Jean Calvin 1559 Academy it is mentioned for the first time in 1561. Today the library of Geneva is also a public library with patrimonial order and the Central Library of the University of Geneva. Your order is similar to that of a national library, as the library of Geneva tries to capture the Genovensia exhaustively.

The Department of incunabula and manuscripts is the most important part of the collection. In it are also particularly valuable and rare documents that cause the interest of researchers around the world. Other, more specialized document types complete the inventory: posters, the Geneva iconography, maps and plans.

The incunabula include over two million volumes and cover all fields of knowledge. However, the library is specialized since the 20th century because of the increasing number of published books in the humanities.

The library receives in connection with the Geneva statutory legal deposit all publications, printed or transferred to Geneva, where it is ( the so-called Genovensia ) to books, magazines and posters.
