Biga Çayı

The River Biga ( Granicus ) today

The Granicus ( Turkish: Biga Çayı ) is a river in Asia Minor, Turkey.

334 BC Alexander the Great at the Granicus met on the army of the Persian satraps of Asia Minor and the Greek mercenaries under Memnon. Alexander forced the crossing of the river and beat the Persian cavalry to flight. The Greek mercenaries were rounded up and massacred. Memnon managed to escape. He received the Grand King Darius III. the upper failure of the Persian fleet in 333 BC and died at the siege of Mytilene on Lesbos.

Until the 19th century AD probably in the 4th century BC, built by the Romans White bridge crossed the river in the direction of Gallipoli, which caught the attention of early European travelers due to its clean design and magnificent marble cladding.
